The makai sidewalk along Alii Drive from Kailua Pier to Hulihee Palace is closed because of high surf.

The makai sidewalk along Alii Drive from Kailua Pier to Hulihee Palace is closed because of high surf.

A south swell will continue to fuel high surf along all Big Island shores through 6 a.m. Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu forecast waves ranging in height from 8 to 12 feet, with occasional sets to 14 feet. The surf is expected to drop overnight to 6 to 9 feet Thursday.

The high surf advisory means waves along affected shores will be higher than normal, and dangerous rip currents are expected. The service said the surf’s impact should be moderate and urges beachgoers, swimmers and surfers to exercise caution and heed advice given by ocean safety officials.
